Setting Goals is Hard

The plan for today’s post was to publicly list my goals as well as my intentions for achieving them.  From my work as a college academic advisor and mental health provider, I know that in order for goals to be successful, you must not only list your goals but also have realistic objectives for meeting them.  This is gonna take some time.  So to get myself thinking about goals, I visited a helpful website I’ve found called Pick the Brain.  What a fabulous site, packed full of inspirational and useful articles on self-improvement and personal development.

The article “How to Achieve Your Goals with Healthy Habits” by Leo Babauta of the blog Zen Habits (which I will be checking out ASAP) gave me some fabulous reminders for successful goal setting.  Thanks, Mr. Babauta!  He says the solution to sticking to those goals that take forever to achieve is to focus on creating a new habit that will lead to the achievement of your new goal.  I’ve heard it takes about a month for something to become a habit.  Babauta says,”By focusing not on what you have to achieve over the course of the next year, but instead on what you are doing each day, you are focusing on something achievable.”  Yes, baby steps!  That’s what I’ve been telling myself all this time.  So I will contemplate on my goals, make some notes, and work toward posting a complete list of my short-term goals for tomorrow’s post.  Wish me luck!  Perhaps you, too, may wish to revisit your own personal goals and do a little tweaking to make them stick.
